home hero

my dad is very vigilant about fire safety. i’m, perhaps consequently, slightly fearful of fires. but i still dread the fire extinguisher issue. let’s face it, they’re ugly. life and home saving, maybe; ugly, definitely.

but hoorah! someone has designed a sleek new fire extinguisher:

home hero

you can buy them at home depot for about $55 and find out more about them here, but sadly, they are not yet available for purchase online.

Bat for Lashes: What’s a Girl To Do?

the first time amy showed me this video i’m pretty sure my jaw dropped when the tamborines started. but maybe that’s just me.

bright eyes: first day of my life

not super flashy or exciting, but this made me think of all the times you play your favorite song for someone and wait, just watching them. i especially love the way the people look at one another.

margot and the nuclear so & so’s: quiet as a mouse

i love this band, i love this artist, and i, obviously, love this video:

this week: videos – First: Andy Goldsworthy

this is a sampling from this artist’s movie Rivers and Tides which i was recommended over and over again by Kate (and Jodi.)
He’s an artist who creates his pieces entirely from natural objects.
I might actually prefer these montages, which kind of grab the some highlights, but if you really love it, you should definitely rent the film.

ipod covers- artists (gelaskins)

artist: Hope Gangloff

update: i made it to the (jam packed) opening, and was so impressed with this show. i feel like it’s not unusual to go to see an artist at a gallery only to see a handful of pieces, but there are about 25 (some huge) pieces in this show. they reminded me so much of friends, in fact- i looked around for a few people who know don’t reside in ny. if you get a chance i highly recommend it. the show runs through 2/9.

gallery show of hope gangloff at Susan Inglett Gallery 522 West 24th Street , New York, NY (Map)

i am going to book it down there tonight(1/10) in hopes of catching some of the opening (from 6-8pm tonight- free! of course) but the show runs through 2/9.

Hope Gangloff Opening

Going.com : “Two artists who make me resent my boring-ass name present new works on paper. Gangloff is an astute chrononicler of the young, disaffected, and possibly inebriated — you’ve seen her work before, we promise, and perhaps recognized yourself in those portraits. Lamper specializes in ” dreamscape of dark forests, feral beasts, and fractured time,” which is probably shorthand for “does a lot of drugs.”

let’s check the farecast!

i had to say it.

so bought tickets to san francisco and BA using farecast and was really happy with them. was pretty sure i wouldn’t be able to afford the last minute tix to california (on thanksgiving weekend no less,) but after a search on their site, playing around with the numbers i realized that i could.

when you’re ready to buy they redirect you to the site of the airline with the deal you want (in my case, jetblue.com & us airways) which is better really, because then you can see even more time options.

they also show you the price history of the tickets you’re trying to buy and make predictions whether you should buy now or wait because the price will drop. (www.yapta.com will guarantee the price won’t drop when they say it won’t and will refund your money if it does.) but i liked using farecast to browse dates/times/prices.

50 covers / 50 books exhibit

aiga 50/50 exhibit

as you may or may not know, i really like book cover design. and by “i really like it” i mean “i am slightly obsessed.” so when i heard about this exhibit (last night) i made plans to go right away (this morning.)

i really enjoyed it- the exhibit is not very large; but if you love design, or books, or both- you should definitely check it out. it’s going on until the end of this month- the 21st, so don’t dally.

deezer.com

oh what’s that you say? your pandora will sometimes get skitzy and skip out at work for a day, mine too.

dear pandora, please fix that.
love, tess

meanwhile, i’m going to suggest a fantastic! new app i’ve been loving.

deezer.com music player

i’d like you to meet deezer.
deezer is a european based music player/site that allows you to make playlists from songs you can choose from searching, their top ten international lists, or that from music of your own that you’ve upload.

so in the same way you can play your refined pandora playlists from any computer you can play your playlists, (of songs you’ve just found, or songs of your own that you’ve uploaded) from anywhere. and my personal favorite: you can play them as many times as you’d like in whichever order you want. like a portable customized web player. tre bien.

Google Pages

oh, you thought i was over google- wrong!
* update: i’ve realized that i don’t think google pedometer is actually from google, but a hack of google maps done by a third party.

so sometimes you just need a website. maybe you’re searching for a job, selling a lot of furniture, trying to make an online shop, or hawk your services as a dogwalker/fishing guide/piano teacher. note: if you’re looking to create a blog, this is probably not the best tool to use, try blogger, or word press or typePad if you’re fancy.

having an online location- a link to anyone in email that doesn’t require them to open any attachments is essential. especially if you’re offering something visual (and you really should be,) as a place anyone can find your info on the web. even if this is only a bit of info about yourself, your contact info, & a picture (optional, but highly recommended- so we know you aren’t a convict and can recognize you when we bring fido to the dog park.)

google pages is a great temp to permanent solution that requires no purchases (no domain/image hosting-which you really shouldn’t have to pay for anymore anyway,) but i do suggest buying a domain name you like- as soon as yesterday. you can always forward that domain to your google page and then just give people your domain as a link.

here is a single page site i created as an example of how you can use google pages as a job search resource.
